Russian is a world language, with a reach that extends far beyond the borders of Russia. In fact, 11 states recognize it as an official language, including Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Estonia. It’s also an official language in some major international organizations, as well as in important regional organizations. When you decide to learn Russian online, you can expose yourself to so many people and cultures.

There are over 150 million people who speak Russian as a native language, and about 105 million who learn Russian as a foreign language. Learning this language can open doors to an important economic and cultural area of the world. It can also help you communicate with many people throughout the world!

Is Russian Hard To Learn For English Speakers?

Typically, Russian is hard for English speakers to learn. The United States Foreign Service Institute classifies languages based on how hard they are to learn. It lists Russian as a “Category III” language, which means it takes extensive study and practice to learn Russian fluently. There are only four categories, so Category III means that Russian is hard to learn!

Of course the amount of difficulty you have learning Russian depends on what type of learner you are, how consistently you study, and what your current knowledge is. In general, the Foreign Service Institute estimates that it takes 1,100 hours of study to speak Russian at a fluent level. This is due to the linguistic and cultural differences between the English and Russian languages. If you study consistently over time and make a genuine effort, it can be easy to learn Russian.

How To Learn The Russian (Cyrillic) Alphabet

When you start to learn Russian online, you’ll immediately notice something different: the alphabet! Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which is different from the Latin alphabet that English uses. The Cyrillic alphabet has 33 letters made up of 10 vowels, 21 consonants, and 2 signs.

It can be intimidating to learn to read Russian, but it’s not always as difficult as it sounds. First, you need to familiarize yourself with the letters. Start by writing them all down and practicing the sounds. Then, try writing different words using the letters. Over time, writing and reading Russian will become easier and you’ll forget it’s a different alphabet altogether! There are so many YouTube videos you can watch to learn the Russian alphabet. Just do a quick search and you’ll find a lot of free resources that can get you started. Remember, you can’t learn Russian fluently without learning the Cyrillic alphabet. Try to learn Russian letters as soon as possible!

Babbel Russian

Babbel is one of the most-marketed language learning apps, which has helped it become one of the most popular apps. The Babbel Russian app offers a wide variety of lessons, helping learners practice their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills. Babbel Russian Review

Babbel is often compared to Duolingo. The format of the lessons is similar, and so is the content. With Russian in particular, however, Babbel’s content is pretty limited. This is pretty common with language apps, as they tend to focus on the more popular languages, like Spanish, French, and German. The content Babbel does have available is solid though. For this reason, Babbel is worth the cost if you’re a beginner looking for introductory lessons. Steer clear if you already have a foundation in the Russian language though. You can read more about the app in this Babbel review.

Babbel Russian Cost

Babbel Russian costs $13.95 per month, but discounts are available if you purchase a longer subscription. The additional subscription options are below:

        • 3 months: $9.95/month
        • 6 months: $8.45/month
        • 12 months: $6.95/month

Babbel also offers a 20-day guarantee. If you’re not happy with the product, you can return it within 20 days of purchase for a full refund.

Mango Russian

Mango is an established brand in language learning, and it’s Russian app is one of the strongest in regards to content. The Mango Languages Russian course helps you learn every aspect of Russian, including cultural aspects and the sometimes difficult grammar. Mango Russian also has a video series to help you learn the Russian alphabet, which is really helpful. Overall, it’s a resource that can help you immerse yourself in Russian and learn it effectively.

mango languages is one of the best language learning apps available today

The Mango Russian app offers a 2-week free trial. After that, it costs $7.99 per month for one language or $17.99 per month for access to all of its language courses. Mango is also widely available at libraries, so check out your local library to see if you can access it for free!

The RussianPod101 app is among the most reputable apps for learning the Russian language. It has a vast collection of materials to assist you with listening comprehension, reading, vocabulary, Russian culture, and writing. It is ideal for beginners and intermediate learners, but may not be the most helpful for advanced Russian students.

The RussianPod101 logo shows a girl listening to music through headphones. There is a speech bubble with the Russian flag, too. RussianPod101 is one of the best ways to learn Russian online by listening.

RussianPod101 Review

Overall, RussianPod101 is a helpful resource to improve your listening skills. There are also additional lessons that improve your grammar, writing, and reading skills. Depending on your subscription level, you can also have access to native Russian teachers to help you learn more effectively. However, the lessons aren’t always organized and the video quality has room for improvement. Despite this, RussianPod101 is still one of the best resources available to learn the Russian language.

RussianPod101 Cost

RussianPod101 has a free version, as well as premium versions that cost from $8.00 to $47.00 per month. There are additional discounts of up to 60% if you pay for a 3, 6, 12, or 24 month subscription upfront. The cost of RussianPod101 is very reasonable considering what’s included at each price tier.

Memrise Russian

Memrise is mainly a flashcard app, but it also offers its own “official” courses in certain languages. The Memrise Russian course is one of these. With Memrise, you can improve your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, as well as increase your vocabulary. You won’t learn much grammar though. One reason Memrise stands out from other apps on this list is that you can learn the Russian alphabet with it. You’ll be able to memorize the different letters and sounds more quickly with Memrise.

memrise is a really popular language app!

Memrise Russian Review

Memrise Russian is one of the most popular apps to learn Russian, so it’s important to include a quick review of it. Overall, it’s a solid app. It has been around for a while and a lot of people use it. The Russian course is definitely catered to beginners though, as it only covers topics to help you get through daily life. It uses native speakers for its audio though, which is a big advantage. The main downside to Memrise is its pricing structure. Depending on your device, you may have access (or not) to certain features, and sometimes you may even pay more. Read the full Langoly Memrise review to learn more.

Memrise Russian Cost

There is a free version of Memrise, but it has limitations. The premium version of Memrise costs $8.99 per month, or you can pay $59.99 per year. You can also buy a lifetime subscription for $119.99. It’s best to try the free version before making a purchase to ensure you enjoy the app.

The Mondly Russian app is a great choice for people who want to track their learning statistics. Mondly Russian incorporates data and innovative technology into its language learning methods by using alternate reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) apps. The Mondly Russian course focuses heavily on teaching words and phrases, as well as improving your writing and speaking skills. While it does include reading and listening, these don’t go beyond words and phrases.

An orange speech bubble with a world map inside of it. This is the Mondly languages app logo.

Mondly Russian Review

The Mondly Russian app can be a great choice for beginners if you’re motivated by data. Mondly tracks how many words and phrases you learn, and tells you exactly when you need to practice them based on an algorithm. While this is a nice feature, it’s not always helpful for everyone because it can also be a distraction. The Mondly Russian course covers the basics, but won’t help you reach a conversational level. Therefore, it’s a good start, but not a long-term solution. Read the complete Langoly Mondly Review to learn more.

Mondly Russian Cost

Mondly offers a free 7-day trial to see if you enjoy learning the app. After the trial, you can pay $9.99 per month for one language, $47.99 per year for one language, or $89.99 for a lifetime subscription that includes all languages.

Duolingo Russian

When Duolingo came onto the scene, it completely changed the language learning industry. It uses a game-like approach to keep language learners engaged. If you choose to follow the Duolingo Russian course, you’ll practice your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. However, it’s important to note that the Duolingo Russian for English Speakers doesn’t teach the Cyrillic alphabet, so you may want to learn that before you start.

duolingo logo. duolingo shows you how to learn a language fast!

Duolingo Russian Review

Learning Russian on Duolingo can definitely help you as a beginner, but it’s not very effective for intermediate and advanced students. Also, when you use Duolingo to learn Russian online, you may not always learn the most useful phrases or words. It’s certainly helpful for pronunciation though, as it’s speech recognition technology is top-notch. Overall, Duolingo Russian is worth a try, but definitely isn’t the best choice for everyone. To learn more, read the full Langoly Duolingo review.

Duolingo Russian Cost

Many language learners recognize Duolingo as one of the best free ways to learn a language. More recently, however, Duolingo has introduced a lot more ads into the free version of the app, which makes it more difficult to actually learn. To avoid ads, you can subscribe to Duolingo Plus for $9.99 per month. A Duolingo Plus subscription lets you practice offline and comes with some additional features, but the cost is a little high for what you get.

Drops is one of the best flashcard apps available today. Its design is sleek and engaging, and its content is very useful. It’s important to note that it is mainly for building vocabulary, so it’s best to use Drops as a complement to other apps. The flashcards in Drops cover a wide variety of topics, all of which will help you quickly learn the words and phrases you’ll need in everyday situations. Read the full Langoly Drops Review to learn more.

Learn Russian Alphabet App

The Drops Russian app specializes in helping you learn the Russian alphabet. It helps you read, write, and pronounce each letter. It also uses spaced repetition to ensure you remember each letter over time. It’s by far the one of the best apps to learn the Cyrillic alphabet.

Drops App Russian Cost

You can use the Drops app for free for 5 minutes every day. This may not seem like a lot, and that’s because it’s not. It can give you a good idea if you like using the app though. For a premium subscription, Drops costs $9.99 per month, $69.99 per year, or $159.99 for a lifetime membership. All subscriptions have access to all languages, not just Russian.

Rosetta Stone Russian

Rosetta Stone is one of the biggest brands in language learning. The Rosetta Stone Russian course follows the company’s philosophy of complete immersion, which makes it stand out from other apps. Immersion means that you only see Russian when you work through the lessons. This can be intimidating at first, but it’s usually one of the fast ways to learn Russian (or any other language). Beginners and intermediate learners will learn Russian with Rosetta Stone, but advanced students may not get much value out of it.

rosetta stone logo

When it comes down to it, the Rosetta Stone Russian course is definitely worth a try. You can try a free trial of the app, and there’s also a 30-day money back guarantee. A subscription to Rosetta Stone costs $11.99 per month (3 month minimum, Russian only), $14.92 per month (12 month minimum, all languages), or $189 for a lifetime membership to all language courses. In addition, you can get a Lifetime Plus subscription for $299, which includes 12 months of unlimited group language classes in all languages.

Pimsleur Russian

The Pimsleur Russian course is a popular choice among language learners because of its focus on audio content. With Pimsleur, you immediately start listening and speaking Russian, even from the first lesson. You won’t get much practice reading or writing with Pimsleur though, so it’s best to use it alongside another app that helps you improve these skills.

The Pimsleur logo. It has Pimsleur written in blue text with a speech bubble above it.

Pimsleur Russian Review

The Pimsleur Russian course is really helpful in improving your speaking and listening skills. If verbal communication is your ultimate goal, this course should be at the top of your list. If you want more of a well-rounded course though, Pimsleur may not be the best choice. You won’t learn much reading or writing with Pimsleur, so you would need to enroll (and pay for) another course to teach you these skills. The content in Pimsleur is pretty helpful overall, but whether or not it’s a good choice for you depends on your needs.

Pimsleur Russian Price

The Pimsleur Russian offers a free lesson to see if you like the content. After that, you pay $19.95 per month for the app. You also have the option to pay per course with Pimsleur. Pimsleur Russian consists of five courses, which cost between $119.95 and $150.00 each. You also have the option to buy five lessons of each course at a time, which costs $21.95. If you enjoy the Pimsleur content, you can buy the entire Russian course for a one-time payment of $575.00.

Transparent Language Russian

The Transparent Languages Russian course has extensive content to help you start to learn Russian online as soon as you sign up. Outside of the usual skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), the Transparent Russian course also offers typing lessons. This is a unique skill and isn’t often covered on other apps.

The Transparent Language logo

The Transparent Language Russian course is more expensive than most other apps on the list. It costs $24.95 per month or $149.95 per year. You can try it for 14 days without paying.

Learn Russian Online With FluentU

FluentU Russian uses real-life videos to help you learn the language naturally and in a cultural context. This can be a great way to learn the language because you’ll learn how native speakers actually speak it. You won’t waste time memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules that you’ll never use. Each video has interactive subtitles, as well as a transcript and vocabulary practice. While the content definitely helps you learn vocabulary and phrases, you won’t get to practice your speaking skills or writing skills too much.

FluentU logo. FluentU is a great language learning app that uses media from around the internet!

FluentU Russian Review

FluentU Russian is a great way to immerse yourself in the Russian language and culture. You can quickly train your ears to understand native Russian from the moment you start learning, and you learn useful vocabulary and phrases from the videos. However, you won’t get any speaking or writing practice with FluentU. It also doesn’t offer structured lessons to help you learn more advanced concepts. For this reason, FluentU Russian can be a helpful complementary resource to other more formal apps or courses.

FluentU Cost

FluentU offers a free 14-day trial that allows you to access the Russian content. This can give you a clear idea of whether or not you want to invest in a premium subscription. A premium subscription costs $30 per month if you pay monthly or $20 per month if you pay for a year upfront. It’s also important to note that some credit card companies may charge a 1% to 3% fee to any transactions with FluentU because it is a Hong-Kong based company.

The Michel Thomas Method

All courses follow the Michel Thomas Method, which removes the stress from language learning. There’s no memorization, and it strips the language down to its key parts. This helps you start to create sentences on your own without having to recall words you memorized in the past.

Michel Thomas Russian Review

In general, people either love or hate the Michel Thomas language courses – There’s nothing in between. In the case of the Michel Thomas Russian course, it seems to miss the mark when compared to other courses. The course explains complex concepts in a simple way, but it explains them in English. In fact, a lot of the course is in English, which doesn’t really help you improve your Russian skills.

Michel Thomas Russian Cost

The Michel Thomas Russian course offers a free lesson and a free booklet to see if the content suits your needs. If you enjoy the content, you can purchase the lessons for anywhere from $11.99 to $100.00. You can also buy the complete Russian bundle for $198.75.

Living Language Russian

The Living Language Russian course has taught US diplomats and other high-profile international figures the language for many years. Because of that, it can be a strong language course for a certain demographic of people. However, it’s definitely not the best choice for everyone.

In fact, for the casual language learner, it’s probably not a course you want to consider. It’s very focused on grammar, which can lead to learners being overwhelmed with minor details. Some content is also too advanced or too simple for the level Living Language places it in.

Living Language logo

You can try a free lesson to see if you enjoy the Living Language Russian course. After that, you can pay $39.00 per month, $50.00 for three months, $75.00 for six months, or $150.00 for one year.

The LinguaLift Russian course contains six different levels, with 25 or 26 lessons in each level. The lessons are in English, but they cover a lot of different topics like writing the Cyrillic alphabet and grammar fundamentals. More advanced topics include handling emergencies and communicating in the workplace. LinguaLift definitely focuses on useful Russian topics, but it has limitations since there is no speaking practice. That makes it great for beginners, but not very useful for more advanced learners.

If you want to try LinguaLift before purchasing a subscription, you can take a free lesson. This will help you determine if you like the program’s teaching style. After that, a monthly subscription costs between $12.99 and $19.99, depending on the length of your subscription.
