Try Duolingo

You may have heard of Duolingo before. It’s one of the most popular language learning apps available today. And the reason it’s on this list is because its Ukrainian course is completely free!

You can use Duolingo to learn basic Ukrainian, but it won’t help you become fluent. The activities are fun and usually helpful, so it can be a good place to start your language learning journey. It’s important to note that it doesn’t teach you the Ukrainian alphabet. Try Duolingo for free by clicking the link below or learn more about it in this Duolingo review.

Key Features

  • Learn basic Ukrainian words and phrases
  • Games are fun and help you remember new vocabulary
  • Study different topics and situations

Pricing

The Duolingo app is free to use, but it’s ad-supported so advertisements will frequently interrupt your learning. You can get rid of them by subscribing to Super Duolingo which costs between $6.99 and $12.99 per month. But I don’t think Super Duolingo is worth the money.

Why You Should Use Apps To Learn Ukarainian

There are a lot of different ways you can study Ukrainian, but using apps to learn is the most efficient. That’s because language learning apps help you focus on specific skills and topics. Other learning tools like textbooks are very rigid.

I enjoy studying with language apps because they offer a more personalized experience. The activities are usually fun, the lessons are short, and they can also track your progress!

How To Use Apps To Learn Ukrainian

Language apps are useful tools to learn Ukrainian, but they’re just that – tools. It’s your responsibility to use them, and it’s important that you use the ones most helpful for you.

Each app on this list offers different features, learning experiences, and content. I always recommend using a few different apps at the same time because this will give you a more well-rounded understanding of Ukrainian. You can use Pimsleur to improve your conversation skills, LingQ to improve your reading, and Mango Languages to beef up your grammar (for example).

  • Great review, thanks! By the way, Duolingo did add a section to learn the alphabet. (That’s what I started with, but now I’m going to check out some of the other options on your list!)

  • Thanks for letting me know, Nika! I’ll have to check out that alphabet section. Feel free to let me know if you come across any other apps that should be on the list too 🙂 Best of luck learning!

  • I am not sure when you wrote this article, but Duolingo has in the meantime a dedicated section for learning the alphabet. The, including for their Ukrainian course.

If people do Ukrainian on Duolingo, they should also have a look at the course on the website (and not only the app), because there are a lot of tips and explanations on the website which are not in the app which help with the grammar.

  • Hey Simone, that’s good to know! Thanks for sharing. I didn’t know they added the tips on the website either. I’ll have to check those out. 🙂

  • I want to recommend the app Moka Mera Lingua, a free language-learning app for children! They just added Ukrainian. There are currently 13 different languages available for children to learn.

  • Thanks for the suggestion, Emilia! I’ll have to check it out!

  • I would love to learn to speak Ukrainian I have no prior training on how to do this

  • I would love to try Pimsleur– but they don’t seem to offer Ukranian.
